David,
So he does a good job of cataloging a bunch of things that are insanely messed up about American healthcare。 But he seriously underdelivers on his subtitle。 He never gets around to saying what, exactly broke American health care, and "how to fix it" seems to involve him playing whack-a-mole against the various conflicts of interests and warped incentives that keep arising, at least in cases he can get a hold of data to uncover the abuses。 I listened to the audiobook, but there's one section towa So he does a good job of cataloging a bunch of things that are insanely messed up about American healthcare。 But he seriously underdelivers on his subtitle。 He never gets around to saying what, exactly broke American health care, and "how to fix it" seems to involve him playing whack-a-mole against the various conflicts of interests and warped incentives that keep arising, at least in cases he can get a hold of data to uncover the abuses。 I listened to the audiobook, but there's one section towards the end where he tells a story about going with a friend to the emergency room。 I'd like to study those few pages more closely because he describes exactly the bit that you need to strike out of a certain form to protect yourself from billing insanity。 As I was reading this book, I ended up on the phone about a special prescription for my daughter。 To complete the order, I had to agree that, in case my insurance didn't pay, I was still responsible for the amount due。 Fair enough, but then I asked what the price would be if I didn't pay。 The answer to that question took a while。 In this case, the answer was a single number。 If you go to the ER, good luck having any idea what you're responsible for。 Just be sure to cross out the part that says you're responsible for anything they decide to charge you。 If the form is on a tablet, make them print it out so you can modify it and get and keep a copy of the version you actually signed。 。。。more
